WHAT IS A COUPLES INTENSIVE?
A couples intensive is an extended, focused therapeutic experience that replaces months of weekly sessions with immersive, concentrated work.
Unlike traditional therapy where you meet for 50 minutes and then return to life with all its distractions, an intensive creates a protected container where you and your partner can go deeper, faster, with sustained momentum.
Our intensives draw on evidence-based approaches including Relational Life Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and The Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, to help couples understand each other more fully, and build something new together.
Is a couples Intensive right for you?
You don't have to be on the brink of divorce to benefit from a couples intensive, though many couples who come to us are. Our intensives are built for:
Couples in crisis: navigating infidelity, a major rupture, or escalating conflict that feels unmanageable
Disconnected couples: you love each other, but you've grown apart and don't know how to find your way back
Busy couples: your schedules make weekly therapy nearly impossible, but you're both committed to doing the work
Couples who've tried therapy before: and felt like you never got deep enough to actually change anything
Couples preparing for a major transition: a new baby, a move, a career shift, or a health crisis
Couples who want results: you're willing to invest time and energy in a way that creates lasting change
Couples considering separation: sometimes the most loving thing two people can do is figure out how to part with care and clarity. If you're leaning toward ending your relationship, an intensive can provide a supported space to have those conversations with honesty, dignity, and respect for what you've shared.
Whether you're in West Chester, Philadelphia, or traveling to work with us, we meet you where you are, emotionally and practically.
Have Questions About Couples Intensives?
-
A marriage retreat is typically a group experience where couples attend workshops or lectures alongside other couples. A couples intensive is private, one-on-one therapy with your therapist. Every hour is focused entirely on your relationship, your history, and your path forward. There's no curriculum. There's just you, your partner, and a skilled guide helping you do the work.
-
Absolutely not. Many of our couples are doing well but want to go deeper, to address long-standing patterns before they become crises, or to invest in their relationship the way they'd invest in anything else they care about. You don't have to be falling apart to want something better.
-
Clarifying your goals is a big part of therapy, and a cornerstone of the intensive process. Each intensive is structured around the goal or goals you and your partner bring, whether that's learning to resolve conflict constructively, rebuilding trust, or gaining more clarity about your relationship’s direction. If you and your partner have very different goals, for example, if one wants to save the relationship and the other is considering divorce, Discernment Counseling is often a better fit than a couples intensive. On the other hand, if both partners are openly exploring separation and are looking for clarity or closure, an intensive can provide focused support for those conversations and decisions.
-
Intensive therapy condenses your healing journey into focused, extended sessions over days or weeks rather than spreading it across months of weekly appointments. This concentrated approach helps you maintain emotional momentum and create breakthroughs more quickly.
-
The length of intensive couples therapy can vary significantly depending on your unique challenges, goals, and circumstances. Some couples benefit from a dedicated weekend, while others may need several days or sessions spread out over a few weeks. We tailor the intensive experience specifically to you and your partner, ensuring you receive the right amount of support and time to address what matters most. We'll discuss your specific needs together during your consultation call.
-
It's rarely too late if you're both willing to show up and do the work. We've helped couples on the brink of separation find their way back to each other. What matters most is your commitment to healing together.
