what is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy is specialized counseling that supports your nervous system after overwhelming experiences (single-incident, ongoing, or developmental). We move at your pace to build safety, reduce symptoms (intrusive memories, hypervigilance, numbness, panic, shame), and restore a sense of agency. Many clients notice improved sleep, steadier moods, more satisfying relationships, and renewed confidence.

Healing wounds through evidence based care

Healing looks different for everyone. In our Philadelphia and West Chester offices, and online across the U.S., we provide trauma-informed therapy for PTSD and C-PTSD, attachment wounds, anxiety, depression, dissociation, sleep issues, grief, and relationship challenges.

PTSD & Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): Flashbacks, hypervigilance, or feeling shut down are common trauma responses. We use EMDR, IFS, and somatic tools to help you feel safer and more present.

Childhood Trauma & Attachment Wounds: People-pleasing, perfectionism, or fear of abandonment often trace back to early experiences. We rebuild inner safety and healthier boundaries at your pace.

Anxiety & Panic Related to Trauma: Racing thoughts and panic are the body’s alarm system. Grounding skills plus EMDR/IFS address triggers so you can choose your response.

Depression Linked to Traumatic Stress: Numbness, low energy, and self-criticism can follow overwhelm. We combine compassion, somatic regulation, and action steps to restore meaning.

Dissociation & Numbing: Spacing out or losing time isn’t a flaw—it’s protection. We work gently to increase present-moment safety and integration.

Sleep Issues & Nightmares: When the nervous system won’t power down, rest is hard. We offer sleep routines, stimulus-control strategies, and EMDR for recurring themes.

Shame, Self-Blame & Grief: Trauma can distort the story of what happened. We use parts-informed compassion and narrative work to release blame and honor loss.

Relationship Stress, Trust & Intimacy: Triggers can strain closeness and communication. Attachment- and trauma-informed therapy (individual or couples) helps rebuild safety and connection.

Our approach to trauma therapy

At The Therapy Group, we meet you where you are. You don’t have to tell everything at once, or ever, to get help. We take the time to listen to the layers of your experience including your culture, identity, relationships, and context and tailor therapy around what helps you feel safest. Whether we start with skills, somatic settling, or EMDR/IFS, we decide together and move at a pace that respects your limits.

  • EMDR therapy for processing stuck traumatic memories without retelling every detail

  • Somatic & nervous-system work (grounding, breath, orienting) to calm the body’s threat response

  • IFS (Internal Family Systems) to heal protective parts and care for wounded inner parts with compassion

  • CBT/DBT-informed skills for emotion regulation, sleep, and triggers

  • Attachment-focused therapy to rebuild safety in relationships

  • Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) when clinically appropriate, structured preparation, support during dosing with a licensed medical provider, and integration sessions to make meaning of the experience and translate insights into everyday change

  • Culturally responsive, trauma-informed care: inclusive of LGBTQIA+ clients, BIPOC communities, and neurodivergent folks
